Review: “The Resurrectionist”

Author – Kathleen S. Allen

“What exactly would happen when someone was resurrected? Would they lose their souls? Would they become less of a person?”

“I had set out to conquer death, and instead became its best patron”

Kathleen S. Allen makes it very clear that Mary Shelley is a direct inspiration, but “The Resurrectionist” is far from a YA Frankenstein Rip-off.

It begins with the struggles of an ambitious young woman in a male dominated world and ends in a tale of gothic horror, paced perfectly upward towards its grim climax.

Allen’s prose places us directly into England during its gothic revival, which makes this a perfect read for the upcoming spooky season. I can’t recall a single time Miss Allen described the London fog, but the book’s avenues are covered in it.

Best when read by lantern light.
