New children’s books!

NEW BOOKS AT STAR CAT BOOKS!

I’m so excited about some of these new books we just got in in time for you to snap them up for Christmas. We have limited copies right now, so get in here while we have them!

I’ll start with a post about our new children’s books:

THE MOUSE MANSION by Karina Schaapman.
I have to admit, I brought this one into the store on spec, after reading a review of it and seeing some of the interior illustrations. And OMG I wasn’t wrong. This is a darling book, heavily illustrated with photographs of tiny knitted mice interacting with incredibly detailed dollhouse-sized set pieces. It’s the story of best friends Julia and Sam as they explore the many rooms within Mouse Mansion, which range from the rustic to the serene to the lovely scene where they encounter one of Sam’s aunties on Friday night and they have Sabbath dinner. I can’t say enough good things about this book—it’s a real find!

Readers = young readers & can be a read-aloud too.

HOW DO DINOSAURS SAY I’M MAD? and HOW DO DINOSAURS GO TO SCHOOL? by Jane Yolen.
Jane Yolen is a master storyteller no matter how you look at it: winner of the Newbury, the Hans Christian Anderson award, and many, many others. These books are part of a lovely series illustrated by Mark Teague, centered on how dinosaurs (drawn based on real dinosaurs! how cool is that?!) behave like children should and shouldn’t. It’s all about manners, and comparing bad manner to good manners. It sounds dry, but the illustrations of dinosaurs throwing a tantrum are very funny indeed, and diffuse any “lesson” the child hearing or reading this book would otherwise balk at. I find them great learning tools, wonderfully illustrated, funny, and just plain fun. All written in rhyming verse—did I mention that?!

Our copy of HOW DO DINOSAURS GO TO SCHOOL? includes an audio CD of Jane reading aloud the book (she does story-telling—it’s worth hearing her if you haven’t), with and without page-turning cues.

HORTON AND THE KWUGGERBUG & OTHER LOST STORIES by Dr. Seuss.
Our local Upper Valley author, Dr. Giesel, apparently had lost manuscripts written under his famous pseudonym, Dr. Seuss, which have now been published as the above title. Replete with Seussian illustrations, this volume has several stories fit to entertain the young and the old alike. Highly recommended.

Don’t forget that we still have copies of what I personally think is the Christmas book of the year: Leo & Diane Dillon’s IF KIDS RAN THE WORLD. The sentiment of kids healing kids, kids healing the world by being kids, is something that tugs deep inside of me. The illustrations, as always for the Dillons, are inclusive and beautiful. This was their last book together: Leo unfortunately died earlier this year. I count it a privilege to have met him once in the company of Jane Yolen.

Get this book: You won’t be disappointed. Neither will anyone you gift it to.
